Refugee and Immigrant Center - Asian Association of Utah

Provides an afterschool program to improve academic performance, build social skills, foster leadership, and provide a safe place for youth. The program partners with schools, non-profits, and community members to provide social, emotional, and academic support. After-school programs are offered at the Sunnyvale Neighborhood Center, Evergreen Junior High School, Olympus High School, and William Penn Elementary.

Provides culturally sensitive counseling services using a strength-based and trauma-informed approach to survivors of domestic violence.

The Utah Trafficking in Persons (UTIP) Taskforce provides a tip line to report suspected cases of human trafficking.

Provides substance use disorder education to individuals and groups using culturally sensitive methods and materials.

Provides evidence-based, culturally sensitive, strengths-based substance use disorder counseling to individuals and groups.

Provides refugee and immigrant-related volunteer opportunities that include after-school programs, ESL class assistants, human trafficking program support, and administrative support.

Provides affordable, trauma-informed, culturally sensitive counseling services for refugees, immigrants, and other community members. The counseling services allow individuals and families to build on their strengths and become integrated members of the local community. Licensed clinicians use evidence-based therapeutic approaches tailored to each client's unique needs.

Assists refugees and immigrants with finding government programs suited to their needs and helps them apply for programs.

Provides clients with rent payment assistance to increase self-sufficiency and eradicate poverty. This service is currently offered in Davis, Utah, and Weber Counties but not in Salt Lake County.

Provides clients mortgage payment assistance to increase self-sufficiency and eradicate poverty.

Medical professionals provide psychiatric medication management services to clients.

Provides basic computer software training on topics including email, word processing, internet, and spreadsheets.

Provides English as a Second Language (ELS) classes to refugees and immigrants. ESL classes increase English proficiency, helping clients be more active and integrated community members. Classes are kept small to enhance student/teacher interaction. Three levels of courses from pre-literate to high intermediate are offered.

Certified interpreters assist refugees and immigrants in accessing services in their native language. The program provides medical, educational, occupational interpretation, and translation services to organizations and individuals. Interpretation services are provided in person or over the phone in Spanish, Arabic, Somali, Swahili, Nepali, and 30+ other languages.

Offers court-ordered community service opportunities such as ESL class assistants, human trafficking program support, and administrative support.

Teaches modern child-rearing techniques to clients in an individually tailored, culturally sensitive, and success-oriented setting. Parents will learn how to foster a better relationship with their children through effective communication despite generational and language barriers.
