Utah Independent Living Center

A nonprofit, outpatient facility that provides an independent living skills program for people with disabilities. Other services offered include advocacy, medical equipment, and technology equipment loans, social, youth job development programs among others. Serves Salt Lake, Tooele, and Summit counties.

Description:

Advocates on behalf of those with disabilities. Individual Advocacy is done by teaching the individual self-advocacy skills. Individuals learn how to communicate and negotiate with agencies, service providers, employers, and others to obtain needed benefits, services, or accommodations. Systems Advocacy is done when UILC works for a positive change in the community. Through public awareness activities, UILC works to promote and affect changes on the local, state, and federal levels.

This program offers individuals with disabilities the chance to engage in recreational and leisure activities within their community. They can go on organized trips to participate in various events and activities, allowing them to mingle with fellow community members while also becoming familiar with local resources.

Provides a contact point for people with disabilities, their families, and the community in locating available services and products such as affordable, accessible housing, transportation options, adaptive equipment, support services, and more.

Description:

Loans assistive equipment to those who have a temporary need, such as a person needing equipment while waiting for funding to purchase their own or a person needing a temporary wheelchair while their own is repaired. Equipment can be loaned out for 3 months with the option to renew the loan if needed. Borrowers assume responsibility for the upkeep of all loan equipment. Equipment available includes wheelchairs, scooters, shower benches, walkers, crutches, commodes, bedside tables, canes, toilet seat risers, and shower seats.

Description:

Provides assistive technology-related services to increase the personal independence of people with disabilities at home and in the community. Staff work closely with each consumer to determine what assistive equipment best meets their needs, collect information and documentation necessary for equipment purchase, and submits this information to the Utah State Office of Rehabilitation (USOR). The funding for equipment is generated from the USOR.

Provides services to people living in nursing homes who want to move out into the community. Services available also help divert individuals living in the community from having to enter a nursing home. The program identifies the needs of participants, helps them make the transition, and connects them to appropriate agencies and support systems in the community.
